Hey Girl! Starting a Business? You Need This!

Part of being successful is being as organized as possible. This is something that a lot of people (myself included) struggle with. I still struggle with clutter, not only in my work space, but also in my mind. I have so many ideas, goals and projects that sometimes the disorganization overwhelms me. That feeling prevents me from getting the things done I need to in order to be successful.

I’ve found that creating a daily routine has helped me to develop habits I need to succeed, not only in business but also in life. For me, structure helps me feel organized and get shit done!

Why is this?

• Less stress – Stress is our enemy. Studies show that stress can cause depression, sickness and weight gain. I am a witness to the latter. Last summer, I stressed myself out so bad that I gained 40 pounds that I am still trying to lose! I was late to places and even with my calendar in my phone reminding me to be places, I was scattered brained and basically, ineffective.

• More time – It may seem crazy at first. You’re probably saying, “who has time to actually sit down and plan a schedule?” Well, it actually saves you time and this is how. If you plan your day, preferably the night before, you have an idea already of where you have to be and what you have to do. You control the time you spend on any one item or project. If you find you don’t have enough time to finish something, that tells you that you need to allot more time for that particular item.

• Better focus – When you’re not running around “like a chicken with your head cut off” (I never got that saying – does a chicken actually still run after its head has been cut off?) you’re able to better focus on what you have to do and how you can get it done.

Here’s a to do list to start getting your daily routine in order: 1. Establish a daily framework:

There are 24 hours in a day and assuming you get a decent amount of sleep (for me that means at least 7 hours), that leaves 17 hours to accomplish what you need to do.

Write a list…don’t sweat the details…this is just the framework.
2. Create the actual schedule:
Keep it simple. Get an inexpensive daily schedule (print one offline)

For example, if you get up at 6am and go to bed at 11pm, you’ll need to begin tasks at 6am and end them at 11pm. Be realistic, allow for travel time and down time. You especially need to schedule time for you.

3. Take time for self

Taking care of you is not an endulgence. If you’re not healthy and happy, you can’t function at your best. Think about the things you like to do and take some time to do them. You can’t work all the time. I know how it is when you feel as if you have to get something done. If you’re driven, like I am, once you set a deadline you work your ass off to meet it. Sometimes, you need to make deadlines flexible. Give yourself a cushion.

4. Allow for and expect mistakes

It takes at least 30 days to develop and/or break a habit.Make changes as needed & adjustments to make it better. Be patient with yourself – you’re learning something new. Fine tune as much as you need to in order to get it right FOR YOU!
